Animal-Assisted Therapy

Meet Dexter the Therapy Dog 🐾

Alternative provision at Branching Out

Helping young people who are experiencing challenges that prevent them from reaching their potential within traditional educational settings.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll probably recognise Dexter, our beloved dog and long-time member of the Branching Out team!

Some of our students have even helped raise and train him during those mischievous puppy years on the farm.

Now four years old, Dexter has officially completed his training with Therapy Dog Training UK, and we’re proud to say he is a fully registered therapy dog.

Why Dexter Matters

Rachel with Dexter

For many students, forming a bond with an animal is far more natural and comforting than navigating complex human social interactions. That’s where Dexter comes in, he helps bridge that gap.

Whether it’s offering calm companionship, a furry shoulder during big emotions, or simply a fun game of fetch, Dexter plays a vital role in:
• Reducing anxiety and stress
• Creating a calm and safe space
• Encouraging trust and emotional expression
• Improving communication and self-confidence

Animal-assisted therapy has well-documented benefits for mental health and well-being, and we’re always happy to provide further reading for those interested.

A Friend With Fur and Purpose

Dexter is more than just a pet—he’s a trained partner in supporting our students. Whether at home visits or on a walk, his presence helps young people feel more grounded, relaxed, and open to connection.

Playing ball with Dexter absolutely improves physical health (So yes, trying to get the ball back does count as P.E.!).
